Question:
Should one refer to cautiousness (Taqiyyah) without being in need?
Answer:
Muhammad Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam Al-Askari (a.) mentioned the verse: “And your God is one God, there is no God except Him, the Beneficent, the Merciful.” (2:163) He said: “He has mercy on His faithful servants among the followers of the family of Muhammad (s.) and gives him space to be cautious (Taqiyyah). They reveal their love for the guardians appointed by God and their enmity for His enemies when they have the power to do so, and they hide it when they are powerless.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah by Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 16 Page 224 Hadith 12]
عن محمد بن الحسين عن الإمام العسكري عليه السلام في قوله تعالى وإلهكم إله واحد لا إله إلا هو الرحمن الرحيم قال: الرحيم بعباده المؤمنين من شيعة آل محمد، وسع لهم في التقية يجاهرون باظهار موالاة أولياء الله، ومعاداة أعدائه إذا قدروا، ويسرون بها إذا عجزوا
Zurarah reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “The Cautiousness (Taqiyyah) is always applied, when it is unavoidable and the one who uses it clears up about it, when it left him.” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, Volume 2 Page 219 Hadith 13]
علي بن إبراهيم, عن أبيه, عن حماد, عن ربعي, عن زرارة, عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: التقية في كل ضرورة وصاحبها أعلم بها حين تنزل به
Zurarah reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “The cautiousness (Taqiyyah) is in everything that the son of Adam is forced to do, because God then has given him the permission.” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, Volume 2, page 220 Hadith 18]
علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن ابن أذينة، عن إسماعيل الجعفي ومعمر بن يحيى بن سام ومحمد بن مسلم وزرارة قالوا: سمعنا أبا جعفر عليه السلام يقول: التقية في كل شئ يضطر إليه ابن آدم فقد أحله الله له

Interestingly, the same expression is used here:
“He only forbade you the dead, blood, pork, and that which was called upon other than God. But he who is forced without committing rebellion or transgression is not to blame. God is full of forgiveness and mercy.”[Al-Baqarah 2:173]
إنما حرم عليكم الميتة والدم ولحم الخنزير وما أهل به لغير الله فمن اضطر غير باغ ولا عاد فلا إثم عليه إن الله غفور رحيم
“He has forbade you the dead, the blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been called upon other than God. But if anyone is forced, and he commits neither rebellion nor transgression, God is full of forgiveness and mercy.” [An-Nahl 16:115]
إنما حرم عليكم الميتة والدم ولحم الخنزير وما أهل لغير الله به فمن اضطر غير باغ ولا عاد فإن الله غفور رحيم
Say: “In that which was revealed to me, i do not find that there is anything forbidden for the eater to eat, unless it is a dead thing, or blood or pork, or an abomination, or an transgression, over which someone other than God has been invoked. But if anyone is forced, and he commits neither rebellion nor transgression, your Lord is full of forgiveness and mercy.” [Al-An’am 6:119]
قل لا أجد في ما أوحي إلي محرما على طاعم يطعمه إلا أن يكون ميتة أو دما مسفوحا أو لحم خنزير فإنه رجس أو فسقا أهل لغير الله به فمن اضطر غير باغ ولا عاد فإن ربك غفور رحيم
