Question:

May one form a religion according to one’s own opinion, if one finds nothing about a matter in the texts of the Qur’an and the traditions?

Answer:
Abu Basir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “matters come to us that we know neither in the Book of God nor in the Sunnah. Do we form our own opinion about them? He said: “No, if you are right, you will not be rewarded and if you are wrong, you have lied about God.” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, Volume 1, page 33 Hadith 11]

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن الوشاء، عن مثنى الحناط، عن أبي بصير قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: ترد علينا أشياء ليس نعرفها في كتاب الله ولا سنة فننظر فيها؟ فقال: لا، أما إنك إن أصبت لم تؤجر، وإن أخطأت كذبت على الله عز وجل

Sulaiman Ibn Khalid reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Be afraid of God with regard to the judgement, for the judgement belongs only to the Imam who is informed of the decision and who rules in justice amongst the muslims: a prophet or a guardian authorized by a prophet.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Vol. 7 page 260 Hadith 1]

عن محمد بن يعقوب عن عدة من أصحابه عن سهل بن زياد عن محمد بن عيسى عن أبي عبد الله المؤمن عن ابن مسكان عن سليمان بن خالد عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: اتقوا الحكومة فإن الحكومة إنما هي للامام العالم بالقضاء العادل في المسلمين لنبي أو وصى نبي

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “I am the head of the Prophets and Ali Ibn Abi Talib is the head of the authorized guardians. The guardians that I have authorized after me are twelve. The first of them is Ali Ibn Abi Talib and the last of them is the Rising One (Qa’im).” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, page 266 Hadith 29]
