Should we attack those who are against unity?

Question:

Is it true that you have to attack everyone who is against unity from the hadith of Imam Ali (a)?

Answer:

No, this is deliberately or unintentionally falsely translated to make arrests and killings look legitimate.

Muhammad Ibn Husain reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Two sorts of people will perish because of me: The exaggerated lover, whom that love leads to something that does not correspond to the truth, and the exaggerated hater, whom that hatred leads to something that does not correspond to the truth, and the best man in my condition is the most moderate, so hold on to it and hold on to the greater majority, for the hand of God is with union and guard yourselves against division, for the deviant from men belongs to Satan, just as the deviant from the sheep belongs to the wolf. Behold, the one who called to this guideline, kill him, even if he should be under my turban.” [Nahj-ul-Balaghah of Ar-Radi, page 327 Sermon 125]

Abdullah Ibn Hasan reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “As for those who belong to the union, these are me and the one who followed me, even if they formed the minority, and this is such that the truth comes from the command of God and the command of His Messenger (s.), and as for those who belong to the division, they are those who deviate from me and from the one who followed me, even if they formed the majority.” [Al-Ihtijaj of At-Tabarsi, volume 1 page 223]

Muhammad Ibn Husain reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Know that no one seeks the union of the community of Muhammad (s.) and its association more than I do.” [Nahj-ul-Balaghah of Ar-Radi, page 678 Letter 79]

Hasan Ibn Ali reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “As for division, they are the ones who adhere to the false, even if they formed the majority, and as for the union, they are the ones who adhere to the truth, even if they formed the minority.” [Tuhaf-ul-Uqul by Al-Harrani, pp. 147-148]

Ziyad Ibn Mundhir reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) about the verse: “Do not be divided!” (3:103) said: “God knew that after their prophet (s.) they would divide and disagree. So He prohibited them from dividing in the same way as He prohibited those who were before them and ordered them to unite on the basis of nearness (Wilayah) to the family of Muhammad (s.) and not to divide.” [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Volume 3 Page 87 Hadith 11]

Abdullah Ibn Abdi l-Aziz reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Beware of the deceivers from amongst the descendants of Fatimah (a.), for from the descendants of Fatimah (a.) will emerge deceivers.” [Al-Malahim of Ibn Tawus, page 123]

Jabir Ibn Yazid reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “Beware of the deviators from the family of Muhammad (s.), because the family of Muhammad (s.) and Ali (a.) has a flag and those besides them have flags, so hold on to the ground and never follow any of them until you see a man from the children of Husain (a.) carrying the covenant and a flag and a weapon from the Prophet of God (s.).” [Ilzam-un-Nasib by Al-Ha’iri, Volume 2, page 117]

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Every flag raised before the Rising of the Rising one (Qa’im), has a transgressor (Taghut) as its holder, whom one serves besides God.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 8 Page 158 Hadith 452]
