Election of the wrong-doers?

Question:

How did the election of the illegitimate Imams according to the reports reached by the lovers of the Ahl-ul-Bait (a.) occur and what stories are circulating among the people of innovation?

Answer:

Sulaim Ibn Qais Al-Hilali reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “By my life, if it really were as they say! And by God, it is not as they say!” Then he kept quiet. Ammar Ibn Yasir asked: “What do they say? The Commander of the Faithful (a.) replied: “They say that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) did not appoint a successor and that the succession was left to them by consultation, yet they did not even do what they pretended to be his teaching! People took the oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr without asking anyone for permission. Then they forced my companion and me to take the oath of allegiance. Then Abu Bakr let the people of Umar take the oath of allegiance without any consultation. Then Umar made it a consultation among six chosen ones and excluded beside these six all helpers and emigrants. Then he said: “Suhaib prays with the people for three days.”Then he commanded the people: “When the three days have passed and the people have not come to a result, then cut off their heads and when four agree, whereby two are against them, then they shall both be killed! Then they consulted about me for three days and their oath of allegiance came about through a consultation among their community. Then they accomplished what you saw yourselves. Moses said to Aaron: “What prevented you from following me when you saw them go astray? Have you then disobeyed my command? He said: “O son of my mother! grab me not by my beard nor by my head! I feared that you would say: “You have caused discord among the children of Israel, and you have not heeded my word.” – 20:92-94 – And I am with the prophet Muhammad (s.) in the position where Aaron (a.) is with Moses (a.). The messenger (s.) made the covenant with me: “If the community goes astray after him and any one else is followed besides me, then I shall take action against them, if I find enough supporters and if I do not find enough supporters, then I shall hold my hand and protect my blood. He informed me about what the community would do after him. If after the killing of Uthman I find enough supporters to stand up for the cause of God and revive the Book and the Sunnah, then I will not hold back and reach out to fight the breakers of the oath. Tomorrow, God willing, I will fight those who lean toward the wrong on the earth of Syria, whose place is called Siffin. Then I will fight the apostates on the earth of Iraq, whose place is called Nahrawan. The prophet Muhammad (s.) ordered me to fight against them in these three places. I did not hold back my hand out of powerlessness or cowardice or because I would detest the meeting with my Lord, but out of obedience to the Messenger of God (s.) and to the preservation of His testament. When I see that I am coming towards supporters, then I find no third except for two ways: either the effort in the way of God and enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, or the disbelief in God and denial of what He sent down, and thereby the attainment of the foremost place in fire and apostasy from submission to Him. The Prophet (s.) already informed me that the death of a martyr would lie behind me and that my beard would be coloured by the blood of my head, but my murderer would be the most wretched of the first and last. It is Uhaimir (Ibn Muljam) who is like the one who severed the tendons of the camel mare and Cain who murdered his brother Abel (a.) and the Pharaoh of the Pharaohs who argued with Abraham (a.) about his Lord and the two men among the children of Israel who changed their book and distorted their Sunnah and the two men from my community (Abu Bakr and Umar). The transgressions of the community of Muhammad (s.) are burdened on both of them. Every drop of blood that is shed, every forbidden possession that is eaten, every forbidden shame that is witnessed, and every judgment that is enforced weighs on them until the day of the resurrection, without any sin being diminished by the way they act.” [Kitab Sulaim, pp. 438 – 440]

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab said: “When the Prophet Muhammad (s.) died, we learned that the helpers from Medina were against us and held a meeting with their people in Saqifah, with the sons of Sa’adah, and Ali and Az-Zubair and who were with them were against us. The emigrants gathered around Abu Bakr, and I said to him: “O Abu Bakr, let us go to our brothers from the helpers! So we left to meet them and we met two righteous men of them who mentioned what people had decided to do. They said: “Where are you going, emigrants?” We said: “We want to go to our brothers from the helpers.” They said: “It is not for you to approach them. Judge yourselves according to their affair!” I said: “By God, we will go to them.” So we left until we reached them at Saqifah, the sons of Sa’adah. Among them was a veiled man and I said: “Who is this? They said, “This is Sa’d Ibn Ubadah.” I said: “What about him?” They said: “He’s sick.” When we had sat down for a while, one of them preached the testimony of faith and praised God as He deserved. Then he said: “Be that as it may, we are the helpers of God and the armed forces of Islam, but you emigrants are a small group and some of you have already tried to dissuade us from our plan and to keep us from the matter.” When he was silent I wanted to give a speech and I had already prepared a lecture that I liked. I wanted to hold him before Abu Bakr and I used to avoid provocation from him, but when I intended to begin the speech, Abu Bakr said: “Wait a while. I hated to make him angry. So Abu Bakr himself made a speech and he was wiser and more patient than me. By God, he never missed a word that I would not have liked in my own speech, except that it was the same or better until he was silent. Then he said: “Whatever good things you have said about yourself are due to you, but only the Quraish are entitled to this matter, because they are the most excellent of the Arabs, because of their ancestry and homeland. I have chosen you two of these men, so you shall take an oath of allegiance to the one of them you would like to take.” Then he took my hand and the hand of Abu Ubaidah Ibn Al-Jarrah, who sat with us, and I detested it, and by God, I would rather, because of a sin, have my head cut off than be in command of a people among whom is Abu Bakr, until the time of my death, when my soul persuades me what I do not find today. Then a speaker among the helpers said: “I am the tribe on which the camel rubs itself with the skin disease to quench its itching and I am like a sublime palm. There should be a commander of you and a commander of us, O Quraish!” Then the unrest and the screaming increased until I feared that there might be a conflict. I said: “Stretch out your hand, O Abu Bakr!” He stretched out his hand and I swore allegiance to him and the emigrants also swore allegiance to him. Then the helpers swore the oath of allegiance to him and we let Sa’d Ibn Ubadah suffer a defeat. A man of them said: “You have murdered Sa’d Ibn Ubadah! I said, “God murdered Sa’d Ibn Ubadah.” Umar said: “By God, no affair that struck us was more fierce than the oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr. We were afraid that if we left the people alone, they would take the oath of allegiance besides us to a man of them, so that we would either take the oath of allegiance to them for something that would not lead to our own satisfaction, or we would be against them, which would have resulted in a great disaster. Whoever takes an oath of allegiance to a man without the counsel of the Muslims shall not be taken an oath of allegiance, nor shall he take an oath of allegiance to the one who received the oath of allegiance, so that both may not be murdered.”[Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6442]

Abdullah Ibn Umar reported that people were saying to Umar Ibn Al-Khattab: “Will you not appoint a successor?” Umar said: “When I appoint a successor, someone has already appointed a successor who is better than me and this one is Abu Bakr and when I refrain from an appointment, someone who is better than me has already refrained from it and this one is the Prophet Muhammad (s.).” Then they praised him and he said: “A desirer and a fleeing. I wish I could get rid of it and not be in possession of it. I bear it neither as a living man nor as a dying man.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6792]

Amr Ibn Maimun reported that the group of elect held a meeting after the funeral of Umar. Abd-ur-Rahman said: “Hand over your affairs to the three of you.” Az-Zubair said: “I surrender my affairs to Ali.” Talhah said: “I surrender my affairs to Uthman.” Sa’d said: “I am surrendering my affairs to Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Awf.” Abd-ur-Rahman said: “Which of you is willing to renounce this matter and to surrender it to the most excellent of them, that God and devotion to Him may witness it? But the two older men remained silent. Abd-ur-Rahman said: “Will you give it to me? And God is my witness, I will give it to the most excellent of you.” Both said: “Yes.” Then he took the hand of one of them and said: “You are closest to the Prophet Muhammad (s.) and you are one of the earliest to submit to the sublime. I beseech you before God, if I give you worldly dominion, then you will walk in righteousness, and if I give it to Uthman, then you will hear and obey.” Then he let go of him, went to the other and told him the same thing as the one, and when he had accepted the covenant, he said: “Raise your hand, O Uthman! Then he swore allegiance to him, and Ali swore allegiance to him, and all the people of the house swore allegiance to him.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 3497]
