Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) reported that Imam Al-Husain (a.) said: “The Prophet (s.) said to Ali (a.) on his night of death: “O Abu l-Hasan, bring paper and ink!” Then the messenger dictated his will until he came to this place and said: “O Ali, after me there will be twelve Imams and after them twelve Mahdis. Therefore, O Ali, you are the first of the twelve Imams. God called you in His heaven the High (Ali), the Chosen (Murtada), the Commander of the Faithful (Amir-ul-Mu’minin), the Most Faithful (Siddiq), the Great Distinguisher (Faruq), the Trustworthy (Ma’mun) and the Rightly Guided (Mahdi), so that these names belong to none but you. O Ali, you are my representative for the deceased and living people of my house and my wives. Those whom you affirm meet me tomorrow and those whom you divorce do not have anything to do with me. Neither does she see me in the forecourt of the resurrection, nor do I see her, and you are my successor (Khalifah) for my community after me. When death approaches you, give it to my son Al-Hasan, the Chosen One (Mujtaba). When death approaches him, he will give it to my son Al-Husain, the pure and oppressed martyr (Shahid). When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Ali, the ornament servant of God (Zain-ul-Abidin) and owner of the marks of prostration. When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Muhammad, the splinter (Baqir). When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Ja’far, the Truthful (Sadiq). When death approaches him, he hands it over to his son Musa, the dominator (Kazim). When death approaches him, he hands it over to his son Ali, the Beneficent (Rida). When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Muhammad, the Trustworthy (Thiqah) and the God-fearing (Taqi). When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Ali, the advisor (Nasih). When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Al-Hasan, the Excellent (Fadil). When death approaches him, he hands them over to his son Muhammad, the Preserver of the family of Muhammad (a.) and these are twelve Imams. Then there are twelve right-guided (Mahdi) after him. When death approaches him, he will hand them over to his son, the first of those close to God. He has three of my names: A name like my name and like the name of my father and he is the servant of God (Abdullah) and the High Praised (Ahmad) and the third name is the rightly Guided (Mahdi). He is the first of the believers.” [Al-Ghaibah of At-Tusi, page 150 Hadith 111]

أخبرنا جماعة عن أبي عبد الله الحسين بن علي بن سفيان البزوفري عن علي بن سنان الموصلي العدل عن علي بن الحسين عن أحمد بن محمد بن الخليل عن جعفر بن أحمد المصري عن عمه الحسن بن علي عن أبيه عن أبي عبد الله جعفر بن محمد عن أبيه الباقر عن أبيه ذي الثفنات سيد العابدين عن أبيه الحسين الزكي الشهيد عن أبيه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم في الليلة التي كانت فيها وفاته لعلي عليه السلام: يا أبا الحسن أحضر صحيفة ودواة فأملا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم وصيته حتى انتهى إلى هذا الموضع فقال: يا علي إنه سيكون بعدي اثنا عشر إماما ومن بعدهم إثنا عشر مهديا فأنت يا علي أول الاثني عشر إماما سماك الله تعالى في سمائه: عليا المرتضى وأمير المؤمنين والصديق الأكبر والفاروق الأعظم والمأمون والمهدي فلا تصح هذه الأسماء لأحد غيرك يا علي أنت وصيي على أهل بيتي حيهم وميتهم وعلى نسائي: فمن ثبتها لقيتني غدا ومن طلقتها فأنا برئ منها لم ترني ولم أرها في عرصة القيامة وأنت خليفتي على أمتي من بعدي فإذا حضرتك الوفاة فسلمها إلى ابني الحسن البر الوصول فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابني الحسين الشهيد الزكي المقتول فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه سيد العابدين ذي الثفنات علي فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه محمد الباقر فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه جعفر الصادق فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه موسى الكاظم فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه علي الرضا فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه محمد الثقة التقي فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه علي الناصح فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه الحسن الفاضل فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه محمد المستحفظ من آل محمد عليهم السلام فذلك اثنا عشر إماما ثم يكون من بعده اثنا عشر مهديا فإذا حضرته الوفاة فليسلمها إلى ابنه أول المقربين له ثلاثة أسامي اسم كاسمي واسم أبي وهو عبد الله وأحمد والاسم الثالث المهدي هو أول المؤمنين

Abu Hamzah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “O Abu Hamzah, from us are after the rising (Qa’im) eleven rightly guided (Mahdi) from the children of Al-Husain (a.).” [Mukhtasar-ul-Basa’ir of Al-Hilli, page 158]

ومن كتاب الغيبة: للشيخ أبي جعفر محمد بن الحسن رضي الله عنه رويت بإسنادي إليه عن محمد بن عبد الله بن جعفر الحميري، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن عبد الحميد ومحمد بن عيسى، عن محمد بن الفضيل، عن أبي حمزة، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام في حديث طويل أنه قال: يا أبا حمزة إن منا بعد القائم أحد عشر مهديا من ولد الحسين عليه السلام

Abu Basir reported that he told Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “O son of the Messenger of God, I heard through your father (Al-Baqir) that he said that there were twelve more Imams after the rising (Qa’im).” He said: “He said twelve Mahdis and he did not say twelve Imams, but they are people from our followers who call the people to our leadership and recognition of our rights.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, vol. 53 page 115 Hadith 21]

محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى بن بابويه، عن علي بن أحمد بن موسى الدقاق، عن محمد بن أبي عبد الله الكوفي، عن موسى بن عمران النخعي، عن عمه الحسين بن يزيد النوفلي، عن علي بن أبي حمزة، عن أبيه، عن أبي بصير قال: قلت للصادق عليه السلام: يا ابن رسول الله سمعت من أبيك أنه قال: يكون بعد القائم عليه السلام اثنا عشر إماما، فقال: قد قال اثنا عشر مهديا ولم يقل اثنا عشر إماما ولكنهم قوم من شيعتنا يدعون الناس إلى موالاتنا ومعرفة حقنا

Hasan Al-Askari (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (a.) said:“Our lovers and our followers are from us and we are all like one body.” [Tafsir Al-Askari, page 79]

عن الحسن العسكري عليه السلام عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال: فان موالينا وشيعتنا منا، وكلنا كالجسد الواحد

Hasan Al-Washsha’ reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “If you obey God, then you are from us people of the house.” [Shajarat Tuba of Al-Ha’iri, volume 2 page 381]

عن الحسن الوشاء عن الإمام الرضا عليه السلام قال: وأنت إذا أطعت الله فأنت منا أهل البيت

Hanan Ibn Sadir reported that he asked Imam Al-Baqir (a.): “Was Muhammad Ibn Al-Hanafiyyah an Imam?” He said: “No, but he was a Mahdi.” [Al-Imamah Wa At-Tabsirah by Ali Al-Qummi, page 60 Hadith 47]

أحمد بن إدريس، عن محمد بن أحمد، عن العباس بن معروف، عن الحسن بن محبوب، عن حنان بن سدير، قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن ابن الحنفية: هل كان إماما؟ قال: لا، ولكنه كان مهديا

Abu Hamzah reported that he spoke to Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “O son of the Messenger of God, I heard your father (Al-Baqir) say: “After the rising (Qa’im) there are twelve rightly guided ones (Mahdi)?” He said: “He said twelve Mahdis and he did not say twelve Imams, but they are people from our followers who call the people to our closeness (Wilayah) and to the recognition of our virtues.” [Al-Iqaz Min Al-Haj’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, page 369]

وقد روى الصدوق في كتاب كمال الدين وتمام النعمة عن علي بن أحمد بن موسى الدقاق عن محمد بن أبي عبد الله الكوفي، عن موسى بن عمران النخعي، عن عمه الحسين بن يزيد النوفلي، عن علي بن أبي حمزة، عن أبيه قال: قلت للصادق عليه السلام: سمعت من أبيك أنه قال: يكون من بعد القائم اثنا عشر مهديا؟ فقال: قد قال: اثنا عشر مهديا، ولم يقل اثنا عشر إماما، ولكنهم قوم من شيعتنا يدعون الناس إلى ولايتنا، ومعرفة فضلنا

Muhammad Al-Ukbari reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “At the turn (Dawlah) in favor of the Rising (Qa’im) there will be from our followers those who are the tops and judges of the earth. He gives each man of them the power of forty men.” [Al-Ikhtisas of Al-Mufid, page 8]

عن محمد العكبري عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: يكون من شيعتنا في دولة القائم سنام الأرض وحكامها، يعطى كل رجل منهم قوة أربعين رجلا

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The Imams after me are twelve. The first of them is you, o Ali, and the last of them is the rising Rightly guided (Mahdi). Through His hand, God conquers the east and the west of the earth.”[As-Sirat-ul-Mustaqim by Ali Al-Amili, Volume 2, page 126]

وأسند ابن بابويه إلى زين العابدين عليه السلام إلى علي عليه السلام قول النبي صلى الله عليه وآله الأئمة من بعدي اثنا عشر أولهم أنت يا علي، وآخرهم القائم المهدي، يفتح الله على يده مشارق الأرض ومغاربها

Isma’il Ibn Ali reported that Hasan Al-Askari (a.) said to his son (a.): “The messenger (s.) has placed you in this world and proclaimed the good news about you. You are the seal of the infallible Imams and he gave you your name and your first name.” [Muntakhab-ul-Anwar Al-Mudi’ah of Baha’-ud-Din An-Najafi, page 260]

عن علي بن عبد الكريم رضي الله عنه قال: وبالطريق المذكور يرفعه إلى إسماعيل بن علي عن أبي محمد العسكري عليه السلام قال لابنه عليه السلام: ولدك رسول الله وبشر بك وأنت خاتم الأئمة المعصومين وسماك وكناك
