Umar Ibn Udhainah reported that Aban Ibn Abi Ayyash said: “Sulaim Ibn Qais heard of Salman, Abu Dharr and Miqdad, may God have mercy on them, a saying from the Messenger (s.), who said: “Whoever died while having no Imam, died a death of ignorance. Then Sulaim showed it to Jabir and Abdullah Ibn Abbas, and they said, “They told the truth and were righteous. We testified and heard it from the Prophet (s.) and Salman said: “O Messenger of God, you said: He who died while he had no Imam died a death of ignorance. Who is this Imam, O Messenger of God?” He said: “From my representatives, O Salman! He who died from my nation, while he did not know his Imam, died a death of ignorance. If he did not recognize him and opposed him, then he is an associate (Mushrik), and if he did not recognize him and neither opposed him nor was close to his enemy, then he is an ignorant and not an associate (Mushrik).” [Kitab Sulaim, page 452 Hadith 71]

الصدوق في كمال الدين قال: حدثنا أبي ومحمد بن الحسن رضي الله عنهما، قالا: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله وعبد الله بن جعفر الحميري جميعا عن محمد بن عيسى ويعقوب بن يزيد وإبراهيم بن هاشم جميعا عن حماد بن عيسى عن عمر بن أذينة عن أبان بن أبي عياش عن سليم بن قيس الهلالي أنه سمع من سلمان ومن أبي ذر ومن المقداد رحمة الله عليهم حديثا عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أنه قال: من مات وليس له إمام مات ميتة جاهلية ثم عرضه على جابر وابن عباس فقالا: صدقوا وبروا، قد شهدنا ذلك وسمعناه من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله، وإن سلمان قال: يا رسول الله إنك قلت: من مات وليس له إمام مات ميتة جاهلية، من هذا الإمام يا رسول الله؟ قال صلى الله عليه وآله: من أوصيائي يا سلمان. فمن مات من أمتي وليس له إمام يعرفه مات ميتة جاهلية. فإن جهله وعاداه فهو مشرك، وإن جهله ولم يعاده ولم يوال له عدوا فهو جاهل وليس بمشرك

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “I am the head of the Prophets and Ali Ibn Abi Talib is the head of the representatives. My representatives after me are twelve. The first of them is Ali Ibn Abi Talib and the last of them is the Rising (Qa’im).” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, page 266 Hadith 29]
