First question:

Some innovators claim that there is a donkey in the chain of transmission in Volume 1 of Al Kafi on page 237. Does this claim conform with the reality?

Answer:

The donkey is not in the chain of the transmission (ุฅุณู†ุงุฏ), but in the content (ู…ุชู†).

Muhammad Ibn Ya’qub reported, that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Prophet Muhammad (s.) spoke to the donkey and he said: ๏ดพMy father and mother be sacrificed to you! My father narrated to me about his father, who narrated about his grandfather, that his father was with Noah (a.) on the ark. Then Noah (a.) went to him and stroked his back. Aban Ibn Uthman reported that Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,The first, living being on the earth, who died was his donkey Al-Ya’fur. He died at the hour when the Prophet Muhammad (s.) left this world. He tore his neck band and ran around until he came to the Well of the Sons of Hutamah and he threw himself into it and it became his tomb. Prophet Muhammad (s.) spoke to Al-Ya’fur and he said: ๏ดพMy father and mother be sacrificed to you! My father narrated to me about his father, who narrated about his grandfather that his father was on the ark with Noah (a.). Then one day Noah (a.) looked at him and stroked his face with his hand. Some may wonder how there can be so few fathers among the donkeys or how it can be that a living being lives so long. There are several aspects that can be considered for this.

We were of three brothers. Prophets rode on all of us. I am the youngest of them and you are in possession of me. Abu Abd Ar-Rahman As-Sulami reported that Abu Manzur said:ย ,,When God made His Prophet (s.) victorious in Khaibar, he received as his share of the spoils of war four sheep, four goats, ten pots of gold and silver and a black and emaciated donkey. The Messenger of God (s.) spoke to him and said: ๏ดพWhat is your name?๏ดฟ The donkey said: ๏ดพYazid Ibn Shihab. God brought forth from the loins of my grandfather sixty donkeys and only prophets rode on them. None of the descendants of my grandfather remained except me and none of the prophets remained except you and I expect you, to ride on me. Before you I belonged to a Jew, whom I caused to stumble and fall down frequently. Therefore, he used to kick me in my belly and hit my back.๏ดฟ The Messenger of God (s.) said: ๏ดพI will call you Ya’fur, O Ya’fur.๏ดฟ The donkey said: ๏ดพI obey you.๏ดฟ Then the Messenger (s.) said: ๏ดพDo you like the female donkeys? ๏ดฟ Ya’fur said: ๏ดพNo.๏ดฟ Therefore, the Messenger (s.) rode on the donkey to go about his business and when he dismounted from the donkey, he sent him to the house of the person he wanted to visit and Ya’fur knocked on the door with his head. When the householder answered the door, the donkey signaled that the person should go to see the Prophet (s.). When the Messenger (s.) died, the donkey went to a well belonging to Abu l-Haitham ibn Nabahan and threw himself into the well, which became his grave, in grief over the death of the Prophet (s.).” Isma’il Ibn Umar Ibn Kathir writes: ,,Several great scholars rejected it.” [Al-Bidayah Wa An-Nihayah by Ibn Kathir, Volume 6 Page 166 – 167]

Husain reported that Amr Ibn Maimun said: ,,At the time of ignorance, I saw a female monkey around whom other monkeys were gathered. It committed fornication and so they stoned it and I also stoned it along with them.” [Sahih-ul-Bukhari, Hadith 3636]

When the shepherd demanded it, the wolf turned to him and said: ๏ดพWho will it have on the day of the predators? On the day, when it will have no shepherd but me?๏ดฟ As a man rode a cow, with a burden loaded on it, it turned to him and said to him:๏ดพI was not created for this. Rather, I was created for plowing the field.๏ดฟ” The people said: ,,Praise be to God.” The Messenger (s.) of God said: ,,I believe in it and so do Abu Bakr and Umar.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 3463]
