What is meant by the word “Rafidah” (رافضة)?

Answer:

The word “Rafidah” (رافضة) or also “Rawafid” (روافض) is the plural of “Rafidi” (رافضي) and comes from “rafada” (رفض), meaning “to reject”. The “rejector” (Rafidi) has a high position in true Islam.

Utaibah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “By God, what an excellent name that God has granted you as long as you follow our word and do not make up lies about us.” Utaibah said: “Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) told me this when I told him about a man who told me: “Be careful to be a rejector (Rafidi)!” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 65 page 96 Hadith 1]

عن علي بن أسباط، عن عتيبة بياع القصب، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: والله لنعم الاسم الذي منحكم الله ما دمتم تأخذون بقولنا، ولا تكذبون علينا قال: وقال لي أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: هذا القول، أني كنت خبرته أن رجلا قال لي: إياك أن تكون رافضيا

Zaid Ash-Shahham reported that Abu Al-Jarud said: “May God make my ears as deaf as my eyes blind if I did not hear a man say to Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (a.): “He has given us a name.” He said: “What name is it?” The man said: “He named us as the rejectors (Rafidah).” Abu Ja’far (a.) put his hand on his chest and said: “I too am one of the rejectors (Rafidah) and he belongs to me. He repeated this three times.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 65 page 97 Hadith 2]

عن ابن يزيد، عن صفوان، عن زيد الشحام، عن أبي الجارود قال: أصم الله أذنيه كما أعمى عينيه إن لم يكن سمع أبا جعفر عليه السلام ورجل يقول: إن فلانا سمانا باسم، قال: وما ذاك الاسم؟ قال: سمانا الرافضة، فقال أبو جعفر عليه السلام بيده إلى صدره: وأنا من الرافضة وهو مني قالها ثلاثها

Abu Basir reported that he said to Imam Al-Baqir (a.): “My life is sacrificed to you, we are given a name by which the rulers allow the shedding of our blood, the dispossession of our property and our torture.” He said: “What is it?” I said: “The rejectors (Rafidah).” He said: “70 men from Pharaoh’s camp rejected Pharaoh and came to Moses (a.) and none of the people of Moses (a.) strove harder than they did and none of his people was more fierce in their love for Aaron (a.) than they were and that is why they called the people of Moses (a.) rejectors (Rafidah). Thereupon Moses (a.) received a revelation from God confirming this name to them in the Torah: “I have granted it to them. And God also grants you this name.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 65 page 97 Hadith 3]

عن ابن يزيد، عن ابن محبوب، عن محمد بن سليمان، عن رجلين عن أبي بصير قال: قلت لأبي جعفر عليه السلام: جعلت فداك اسم سمينا به استحلت به الولاة دماءنا وأموالنا وعذابنا، قال: وما هو؟ قال: الرافضة، فقال أبو جعفر عليه السلام: إن سبعين رجلا من عسكر فرعون رفضوا فرعون فأتوا موسى عليه السلام فلم يكن في قوم موسى أحد أشد اجتهادا وأشد حبا لهارون منهم فسماهم قوم موسى الرافضة، فأوحى الله إلى موسى أن أثبت لهم هذا الاسم في التوراة فاني نحلتهم، وذلك اسم قد نحلكموه الله

Sulaiman Al-A’mash reported that he told Imam As-Sadiq (a.): ” May my life be sacrificed to you, people name us as the rejectors (Rafidah), but who are the rejectors (Rafidah)? He said: “By God, it was not they who gave you this name, but God Himself who gave you this name in the Torah and in the Gospel through the tongue of Moses (a.) and the tongue of Jesus (a.). 70 men among the people of Pharaoh rejected Pharaoh and joined the faith of Moses (a.), and for this reason God called them the rejectors (Rafidah). Thereupon Moses (a.) received a revelation from God confirming this name to them in the Torah until it passed over the tongue of Muhammad (s.). God divided them into numerous groups and they multiplied into numerous nations, rejecting the good, but you rejected the bad and remained steadfast with the people of the house of your prophet (a.). Whatever path you took, your Prophet (s.) also took it and you chose whom God and His Messenger (s.) chose. Therefore, I proclaim to you the good news and again I proclaim to you the good news, because the mercy of God encompasses you.The accepted one is the good among them, and the recipient of forgiveness is the one who is guilty among them, and whoever does not meet God with the one you have met, He does not accept his good deeds from him, nor does He forgive him his wrongdoings. O Sulaiman, shall I entrust something to you?” I said: “Increase my knowledge, may my life be sacrificed to you!” He said: “The angels ask the forgiveness of God for you until you are purified from sin, just as the leaf of a tree is torn away on a windy day, and that is the Word of God: “Those who bear the throne and those who stand around it glorify the praise of their Lord and believe in Him. They ask forgiveness for those who believe: “Our Lord! You embrace all things in Your mercy and knowledge. So forgive those who have been converted and have followed Your path, and protect them from the chastisement of Hell. Our Lord! let them enter the Gardens of Eden, which You have promised them, as well as the righteous from their fathers, their wives, and their offspring: You are the Mighty, the Wise. And protect them from wrongdoing. On that day, whom You save from wrongdoing, You have had mercy on them, and that is the great success.” (40:7-9) These are our followers and by God, it is for you. O Sulaiman, shall I entrust something to you?” I said: ” May my life be sacrificed to you, increase my knowledge!” He said: “No one follows the confession of Abraham (a.) except us and our followers and the rest of mankind has nothing to do with it.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 65 Page 97 – 98 Hadith 4]

عن محمد بن القاسم بن عبيد، عن الحسن بن جعفر، عن الحسين، عن محمد يعني ابن عبد الله الحنظلي، عن وكيع، عن سليمان الأعمش قال: دخلت على أبي عبد الله جعفر بن محمد عليهما السلام قلت: جعلت فداك إن الناس يسمونا روافض، وما الروافض؟ فقال: والله ما هم سموكموه، ولكن الله سماكم به في التوراة الإنجيل على لسان موسى ولسان عيسى عليهما السلام وذلك أن سبعين رجلا من قوم فرعون رفضوا فرعون ودخلوا في دين موسى فسماهم الله تعالى الرافضة، وأوحى إلى موسى أن أثبت لهم في التوراة حتى يملكوه على لسان محمد صلى الله عليه وآله. ففرقهم الله فرقا كثيرة وتشعبوا شعبا كثيرة، فرفضوا الخير فرفضتم الشر واستقمتم مع أهل بيت نبيكم عليهم السلام فذهبتم حيث ذهب نبيكم، واخترتم من اختار الله ورسوله، فأبشروا ثم أبشروا فأنتم المرحومون، المتقبل من محسنهم والمتجاوز عن مسيئهم، ومن لم يلق الله بمثل ما لقيتم لم تقبل حسناته ولم يتجاوز عن سيئاته، يا سليمان هل سررتك؟ فقلت: زدني جعلت فداك، فقال: إن لله عز وجل ملائكة يستغفرون لكم، حتى تتساقط ذنوبكم، كما تتساقط ورق الشجر في يوم ريح، و ذلك قول الله تعالى الذين يحملون العرش ومن حوله يسبحون بحمد ربهم و يستغفرون للذين آمنوا هم شيعتنا وهي والله لهم يا سليمان، هل سررتك؟ فقلت: جعلت فداك زدني! قال: ما على ملة إبراهيم عليه السلام إلا نحن وشيعتنا، وسائر الناس منها برئ

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani writes: “Shiaism is the love for Ali Ibn Abi Talib and the preference of him over all the companions of the Prophet (s.), and whoever regards him better than Abu Bakr and Umar is an exaggerator in his Shiite inclination and is called a rejector (Rafidi) and if not, then he is just a Shiite.” [Muqaddamat Fath Al-Bari Fi Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari, page 460]

قال ابن حجر العسقلاني: والتشيع محبة على وتقديمه على الصحابة فمن قدمه على أبى بكر وعمر فهو غال في تشيعه ويطلق عليه رافضي وإلا فشيعي

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Before the hour comes, a group called Rejectors (Rafidah) will appear. They have nothing to do with Islam.” [Dala’il-un-Nubuwwah of Al-Baihaqi, Hadith 2934]

أخبرنا أبو عبد الله الحافظ, حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب, حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الصغاني, حدثنا الأسود بن عامر, قال: أخبرني أبو سهل, قال: أخبرني كثير النواء, قال: أخبرنا إبراهيم بن الحسن, عن أبيه, عن جده, قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: يخرج قبل قيام الساعة قوم يقال لهم: الرافضة برآء من الإسلام

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “In the end-times, a group named as the Rejectors (Rafidah) will appear, because they reject Islam.” [Al-Musnad of Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Hadith 787]

حدثنا عبد الله, حدثنا محمد بن جعفر الوركاني في سنة سبع وعشرين ومائتين, حدثنا أبو عقيل يحيى بن المتوكل, حدثنا محمد بن سليمان لوين في سنة أربعين ومائتين, حدثنا أبو عقيل يحيى بن المتوكل, عن كثير النواء, عن إبراهيم بن حسن بن حسن بن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله, عن أبيه, عن جده, قال: قال علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: يظهر في آخر الزمان قوم يسمون الرافضة, يرفضون الإسلام

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “In the end times, a group named as the Rejectors (Rafidah) will appear, because they reject Islam and call themselves Muslims. Kill them, for they are idolaters!” [Al-Musnad of Abu Ya’la, Hadith 2560]

حدثنا زهير, حدثنا هاشم, حدثنا عمران بن زيد التغلبي, حدثني الحجاج بن تميم, عن ميمون بن مهران, عن عبد الله بن عباس, عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم, قال: “يكون في آخر الزمان قوم ينبزون الرافضة: يرفضون الإسلام ويلفظونه فاقتلوهم , فإنهم مشركون

Fatimah (a.) reported that the Messenger (s.) said to Ali (a.): “O son of Abu Talib, you and your followers are in the Garden of Paradise. There will be people who first ascribe love for you to themselves and then leave from Islam just as the arrow leaves the bow. They have a notorious name and are named as the rejectors (Rafidah). If you meet them, kill them, for they are idolaters!” [Al-Manaqib of Al-Khawarizmi Al-Hanafi, page 355 – 356 Hadith 367]

وبهذا الاسناد عن أحمد بن الحسين هذا، أخبرنا أبو سعيد الماليني، أخبرنا أبو أحمد بن عدي، أخبرنا أبو يعلى وأحمد بن الحسن الصوفي قالا: حدثني أبو سعيد الأشج، حدثني تليد بن سليمان، عن أبي الجحاف، عن محمد بن عمرو الهاشمي، عن زينب بنت علي، عن فاطمة بنت رسول الله قالت: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله لعلي عليه السلام: أما انك يا بن أبي طالب وشيعتك في الجنة، وسيجئ أقوام ينتحلون حبك قبل ثم يمرقون من الاسلام كما يمرق السهم من الرمية، لهم نبز يقال لهم الرافضة فان لقيتهم فاقتلهم فإنهم مشركون

Fatimah (a.) reported that the Messenger (s.) said to Ali (a.): “He is in the garden of paradise, but among his followers there is a group who know Islam and reject it afterwards. They have a notorious name and they are named as the Rejectors (Rafidah). Whoever meets them, let him kill them, for they are idolaters!” [Al-Musnad of Abu Ya’la, Hadith 6707]

حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج, حدثنا ابن إدريس, عن أبي الجحاف داود بن أبي عوف, عن محمد بن عمرو الهاشمي, عن زينب بنت علي, عن فاطمة بنت محمد, قالت: نظر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى علي, فقال: هذا في الجنة , وإن من شيعته قوما يعلمون الإسلام, ثم يرفضونه, لهم نبز يسمون الرافضة, من لقيهم فليقتلهم فإنهم مشركون

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O Ali, there will be a group in my community that will be committed to love the people of the house. They have a notorious name and they are named as the rejectors (Rafidah). Go and fight against them, for they are idolaters!”Nur-ud-Din Al-Haithami writes: “According to its chain, the tradition is good (Hasan).” [Majma’-uz-Zawa’id, Hadith 16434]

وعن ابن عباس قال: كنت مع النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – وعنده علي, فقال النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم -: يا علي, سيكون في أمتي قوم ينتحلون حب أهل البيت, لهم نبز يسمون الرافضة, قاتلوهم فإنهم مشركون. قاال نور الدين الهيثمي: رواه الطبراني, وإسناده حسن

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “After me a group will appear with a notorious name and they will be named as the Rejectors (Rafidah). When you meet them, go and fight against them, for they are idolaters!” I said: “O messenger of God, by what sign can they be recognized?” He said: “They say about you what is not fitting for you and they attack my companions and insult them.” [Kitab As-Sunnah of Amr Ibn Abi Asim, Hadith 813]

حدثنا محمد بن علي بن ميمون, حدثنا أبو سعيد محمد بن أسعد التغلبي, حدثنا عبثر بن القاسم أبو زبيد, عن حصين بن عبد الرحمن, عن أبي عبد الرحمن السلمي, عن علي, قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: سيأتي بعدي قوم لهم نبز يقال لهم: الرافضة, فإذا لقيتموهم فاقتلوهم, فإنهم مشركون قلت: يا رسول الله, ما العلامة فيهم قال: يقرضونك بما ليس فيك, ويطعنون على أصحابي ويشتمونهم

Abu Sulaiman Al-Hamdani reported that Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) said: “In the end times, a group will appear with a notorious name, for they are named as the rejectors (Rafidah). They say that they are our followers, but they are not our followers, and a sign of this is that they revile Abu Bakr and Umar. Wherever you find them, you must kill them, for they are idolaters!” [Talbis Iblis of Ibn Al-Jawzi, Hadith 62]

أخبرنا أخبرنا سعد الله بن علي, نا الطريثيثي, نا هبة الله الطبري, نا محمد بن عبد الرحمن, نا البغوي, ثنا سويد بن سعيد, ثنا محمد بن حازم, عن أبي خباب الكلبي, عن أبي سليمان الهمداني, عن علي كرم الله وجهه, قال: يخرج في آخر الزمان قوم لهم نبز يقال لهم: الرافضة ينتحلون شيعتنا, وليسوا من شيعتنا وآية ذلك أنهم يشتمون أبا بكر وعمر لعنة الله عليهما أينما أدركتموهم فاقتلوهم أشد القتل, فإنهم مشركون

Ali Ibn Umar Ad-Daraqutni says: “Abu Bakr and Umar are undoubtedly better than the two (Uthman and Ali) and anyone who dissagrees with this is through and through a Shiite. Whoever is angry with Abu Bakr and Umar, although the correctness of their leadership (Imamah) is part of the faith, is a disgusting rejector (Rafidi). Whoever insults Abu Bakr and Umar and does not consider them to be imams of the right guidance is among the exaggerators of the rejecters (Rafidah), may God destroy them.” [Siyar A’lam An-Nubala’ by Adh-Dhahabi, Volume 16 page 458]

قال الإمام الحافظ أبو الحسن علي بن عمر الدارقطني: والأفضل منهما بلا شك أبو بكر وعمر، من خالف في ذا فهو شيعي جلد، ومن أبغض الشيخين وأعتقد صحة إمامتهما فهو رافضي مقيت، ومن سبهما وأعتقد أنهما ليسا بإمامي هدى فهو من غلاة الرافضة، أبعدهم الله

Ibn Abd Rabbih Al-Andalusi writes: “They are given the name Rejectors (Rafidah) because they reject Abu Bakr and Umar, and of those who have gone astray, none but them rejects them.” [Aqd-ul-Farid, Volume 2 Page 245]

قـال ابن عبـد ربـه الأندلسي: وإنما قيل لهم رافضة، لأنهم رفضوا أبا بكر وعمر، ولم يرفضهما أحد من أهل الأهواء غيرهم

Al-Buwaiti reported that he asked Muhammad Ibn Idris Ash-Shafi’i: “May I pray behind the rejector (Rafidi)?” Ash-Shafi’i replied: “Do not pray behind the rejector (Rafidi), the Qadri and the Murji’!” Al-Buwaiti said: “Describe these people to us!” Ash-Shafi’i replied: “Whoever says that faith (Iman) consists only of words (without deeds) is a murji’: Whoever says that Abu Bakr and Umar are not imams is a rejector (rafidi) and whoever makes the will depend only on himself (without destiny) is a qadri.” [Siyar A’lam An-Nubala’ by Adh-Dhahabi, Volume 10 page 31]

الساجي: حدثنا إبراهيم بن زياد الابلي، سمعت البويطي يقول: سألت الشافعي: أصلي خلف الرافضي؟ قال: لا تصل خلف الرافضي، ولا القدري، ولا المرجئ. قلت: صفهم لنا. قال: من قال: الايمان قول، فهو مرجئ، ومن قال: إن أبا بكر وعمر ليسا بإمامين، فهو رافضي، ومن جعل المشيئة إلى نفسه، فهو قدري

Muhammad Ibn Isma’il Al-Bukhari writes: “There is no difference for me whether I pray behind a follower of Jahm Ibn Safwan and a rejector (Rafidi) or behind the Jews and Nazarenes. One does not give them the greeting of peace nor does one return their greeting of peace. Neither do we marry them, nor give them witness, nor eat of their slaughtered flesh.” [Khalq Af’al Al-Ibad, page 13]

قال محمد بن إسماعيل البخاري: ما أبالي صليت خلف الجهمي والرافضي، أم صليت خلف اليهود والنصارى ولا يسلم عليهم ولا يعادون ولا يناكحون ولا يشهدون ولا تؤكل ذبائحهم

Ibn Hajar Al-Haitami writes: “According to the school of law of Abu Hanifah, he who rejects the succession of Abu Bakr and Umar is an disbeliever, contrary to what some of them say, and the statement is correct that he is an disbeliever. In the legal opinions regarding the innovators, it says that “the one who rejects the leadership of Abu Bakr is an infidel and some of them say that he is an innovator, but it is true that he is an infidel and so is the one who rejects the succession of Umar.” [As-Sawa’iq-ul-Muhriqah, page 359]

قال ابن حجر الهيثمي: فمذهب أبي حنيفة رضي الله عنه أن من أنكر خلافة الصديق وعمر فهو كافر على خلاف حكاه بعضهم وقال الصحيح أنه كافر. وقال الهيثمي: وفي التفاوى البديعية من أنكر إمامة أبي بكر رضي الله عنه فهو كافر وقال بعضهم هو مبتدع والصحيح أنه كافر وكذلك من أنكر خلافة عمر

Ahmad Ibn Muhammad At-Tahawi writes: “The rejector of the succession of Abu Bakr is just as much an disbeliever as the rejector of the night journey (Mi’raj) of the Prophet.” [Hashiyyat At-Tahawiyyah, page 303]

قال أحمد بن محمد الطحاوي الحنفي: وإن أنكر خلافة الصديق كفر كمن أنكر الإسراء

Mulla Ali Al-Qari writes: “Should anyone reject the succession of Abu Bakr and Umar, he will be declared an disbeliever.” [Sharh Al-Fiqh Al-Akbar, page 198]

قال الملا علي القاري: ولو انكر خلافة الشيخين يكفر

Kamal Ibn Al-Hamam says: “As for the rejecters (Rafidah), anyone who puts Ali higher than Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman is an innovator and anyone who rejects the succession of Abu Bakr and Umar is an disbeliever.” [Fath-ul-Qadir, Volume 1 Page 350]

قال كمال بن الهمام : وفي الروافض أن من فضل عليا على الثلاثة فمبتدع , وإن أنكر خلافة الصديق أو عمر – رضي الله عنهما – فهو كافر

Nizam Al-Jilali writes: “Whoever rejects the leadership (Imamah) of Abu Bakr is an unbeliever, and some claim that he is only a innovator and not an disbeliever, but in reality he is an disbeliever.” [Al-Fatawa Al-Hindiyyah, Volume 2 Page 264]
