Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes:“As for the 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal, know that there is a difference between the scholars who do not follow and the scholars who follow the Imams (a. ), there is a disagreement about the time of the death of Umar Ibnu l-Khattab and the most famous between the two groups is that he was killed on the 26th day of the month Dhu l-Hijjah, as we have pointed out before and some also support the 27th day and those two groups report it from historians. From the reliable books it is known, as it is known today among the simple followers of the people of the house (a.), that he was killed on the 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal and this was also known before among a number of scholars of the tradition of the followers of the people of the house (a.). The venerable head of the scholars, Ali Ibn Tawus, already referred in his book named Al-Iqbal to a report by Ibn Babawaih, which was narrated from Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) that he was killed on the 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal. From the report it can be understood that the scholar As-Saduq found his religious conviction in it, even though the head of the scholars himself already subjected this tradition to interpretations and he mentioned that a group of those who do not belong to the culture of the Arabic language always honour and appreciate this day because of it. The head of the scholars, Ali Ibn Tawus, already confirmed this remaining and prevailing confession in his book called Zawa’id-ul-Fawa’id and gave a reliable report on this view and so he said that Ibn Abi l-Ala’ Al-Hamdani Al-Wasiti and Yahya Ibn Muhammad Ibn Juraih Al-Baghdadi reported: “We quarreled about Umar Ibnu l-Khattab and his matter led us to a dispute. Thereupon we went to see Ahmad Ibn Ishaq Al-Qumi, the companion of the father of Hasan Al-Askari (a.), in the city of Qumm. We knocked on the door and a little Iraqi girl came out to us. We asked her about him and she replied: “He is busy with his celebration, because it is a holiday.” I said: “Praise be to God! Among the followers of the people of the house (a.) there are four holidays: the feast of breaking fast, the feast of sacrifice, the feast of Ghadir and Friday.” She replied that Ahmad Ibn Ishaq reported from his master, Ali Al-Hadi (a.): “This day is a holiday and it is the best holiday for the people of the house (a.) and their lovers.” We said: “Then let us go to him so that we may know something about our place.” Then we walked in to him, while he was wrapped in a cloth, smelling of a nice scent and stroking his face. We refused him this, but he said: “It is not incumbent on you, for I have already done the full body wash for the holiday.” We said at first: “Is this a holiday?” He answered: “Yes, it is, and it was on the ninth day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal.” Then we entered his house and sat down and he narrated that on the 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal. Then we entered his house and sat down and he narrated that he visited his master Ali Al-Hadi (a.) in Samarra on the 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal. He ordered all his servants to wear new clothes and burnt fragrant wood in an incense burner in front of him. Ahmad said: “My father and mother be sacrificed to you, O son of the Messenger of God! Has this joyful day been revived today for the people of the house (a.)?” The Imam (a.) said: “Is there a more powerful day for the people of the house (a.) than the 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal?” Ali Al-Hadi (a.) reported from his father, Muhammad Al-Jawad (a.) that Hudhaifah Ibn Al-Yaman visited the Prophet Muhammad (s.) and saw the Commander of the Believers (a.) and his two sons (a.) eating with the Messenger (s.). The Prophet (s.) looked at their faces smiling and said to Hasan and Husain (a.): “Eat, eat and enjoy the blessing and bliss of this day, because on this day God will bring down His enemy and the enemy of your grandfather! On that day, God will accept the deeds of your followers and lovers. It is the day when Pharaoh of the people of the house (a.) will perish, their oppressor and dispossessor of their rights. On that day, God will bring forth what they used to do and destroy it like dust which is blown away.” Hudhaifah said: “O Messenger of God, is there anyone among your community and companions who desecrates this holiness?” He answered, “Yes, O Hudhaifah, an unjust man among the hypocrites, who behaves like a boastful tyrant toward them, and uses deceit and brings shame on their heads under my community. He leads people away from the way of God, falsifies the book of God and changes my Sunnah. He dispossesses the heritage of my descendants and attributes knowledge to himself. He has the audacity to rebel against his Imam (Ali) after me and to seize the possessions of men without a resolution of it and to waste them instead of obedience to God. He lies about me and my brother (Ali) and envies my daughter (Fatimah) for her right. She will make a petition to God against him and He will answer it that day.” Hudhaifah said: “O Messenger of God, call on your Lord, that He may put him to death while you are still alive!” He replied: “O Hudhaifah, I detest to contradict the decision of God and I asked Him to give Him preference over all other days on this day when He will bring him to destruction, so that he may be a Sunnah to be followed by my lovers and the followers of the people of my house (a.).” God revealed to His Messenger (s.): “O Muhammad, you and the people of the house (a.) will be afflicted by worldly misery, disaster, oppression of the hypocrites and dispossession of My servants to whom you gave advice. You were honest with them, but they cheated you. You granted them mercy, but they pushed you away. By My power, omnipotence and dominion, I will open a thousand gates from the deepest abyss of hellfire and will carry to it those who, according to you, robbed the right of your guardian Ali, who was authorized by you, and his companions are the basis of the esteem in which Iblis showed Adam and was then cursed. I will make this hypocrite an example on the Day of Resurrection, just as the Pharaohs of the prophets and the enemies of the faith did in the place of the gathering. I will gather them and their companions in the fire, in which I will make them wander forever. O Muhammad, the guardian authorized by you in your position is being harmed by the pharaoh and tyrant (Umar) who has the audacity to change My words. He associates with Me and leads people astray from My way. He appoints a calf of his own accord and disbelieves in Me. I commanded My angels in the seven heavens and your followers and your lovers to hold a feast on the day I end his life and I ordered My angels to praise Me and ask forgiveness for your followers and lovers among the children of Adam. O Muhammad, on that day I commanded the noble scribes to raise their pencils and not to record any iniquity of My creation out of honor to you and to the guardian authorized by you. O Muhammad, I have made this day a holiday for you, the people of your house and your followers.I swear by My Glory and Majesty that I will grant the reward of the angels surrounding My Throne to anyone who will celebrate that day and I give him permission to intercede for his neighbours and I increase his prosperity, I release every year on that day thousands of your followers and lovers and followers from the fire and I reward their efforts and forgive their misdeeds and accept their deeds” Hudhaifah said: “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) then stood up and entered the house of Umm Salamah (r.) and I went without a doubt in my mind to cherish the Second (Umar) and I saw him after the death of the Messenger (s. ) committing wrongdoing, pursuing disbelief, abandoning faith, reaching for power, falsifying the Qur’an, burning the house of revelation, mixing the Sunnah with innovations and changing the doctrine and reports of the Sunnah, rejecting the testimony of the Commander of the Believers (a.), Lie against Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of God (a. ) dispossess Fadak of her, please the Jews, Nazarenes and Zoroastrians, enrage the eyeball of the Chosen One (a.) who was never pleased with him, distort everything about the Sunnah, lay the foundation for the murder of the Commander of the Believers (a. ), bring forth injustice, forbid what God allowed and allows, what God forbade, encourage people to profit from the skins of camels, slap the face of the pure (a.), climb on the pulpit of the messenger (s.), make up lies about the Commander of the Believers (a.), and annul and reject his view.” Hudhaifah said: “God heard the supplication of my Commander against this hypocrite (Umar) and it happened as it happened, that he was slain by the hand of the killer (Abu Lu’lu’ah), therefore God receives those who killed him into His mercy!” Hudhaifah visited Ali (a.) to tell him of his joy at the killing of the hypocrite and he said: “O Hudhaifah, do you remember the day when you visited the Prophet Muhammad (s.) and he took food with his two grandchildren and me and he expressed the joy of that day?” Hudhaifah said: “Yes, O brother of the Messenger of God!” Then he said: “By God, the Blessed and Exalted One, this is the day when God delights the children of the Prophet (s.) and I know 72 names for this day.” Hudhaifah said: “O Commander of the Believers, I would like to hear the names of this 9th day of the month Rabi’-ul-Awwal.” Ali (a. ) replied: “It is the day of rest, the day of liberation from pressure and suffering, the second day of Ghadir, the day of taking away the burden, the day of the benefits and raising the pen, the day of right change, the day of joy of a new birth, the day of blessing, the day of retribution, the day of the great feast of God, the day of request and answer, the day of great perseverance, the day of removing black color, the day of provision, the day of the fall of the erected walls, the day of regret for the oppressors, the day of the victory of our followers, the day of the expulsion of sorrows, the day of triumph, the day of the offer, the day of power, the day of forgiveness, the day of joy for our followers, the day of reflection, the day of great tributes, the day of the second breaking of the fast, the day of the path of God, the day of well-being, the holiday of the people of the house, the day of the victory of the children of Israel, the day on which God accepts the deeds of our followers, the day of the giving out of donations, the day of the request for increase, the day of the killing of the hypocrite, the day of the esteemed cheerfulness of the people of the house, the day of the testimony, the day on which the oppressor bites his hand, the day of the downfall of the aberrations, the day of achievement, the day of the testimony, the day of forgiveness for the believer, the day of the beloved deed, the day when the hypocrite’s reign ceases, the day of the agreement, the day of the believer’s well-being, the day of the battle of prayers, the day of pride, the day of thanksgiving, the day of victory for the oppressed, the day of visiting, the day of love, the day of manifestation of innovation, the day of righteousness, the day of admonition, the day of worship, the day of devotion to God.”Hudhaifah said: “I rose up and left the commander of the believers (a.), telling myself that if I were not successful in doing a reward for good deeds outside of this day, I would be satisfied with the reward of this day.” Muhammad Ibn Abi l-Ala’ and Yahyab Ibn Juraih reported that each of them stood up and kissed the head of Ahmad Ibn Ishaq and said: “Praised be to God that He did not take our souls before He honored us with the grace of this blessed day.” And they left the place and spent it as a holiday and therefore it is the holiday of the followers of the people of the house (a.).” [Zad-ul-Mi’ad, page 253 – 257]
