Abdullah ibn Umar reported that Prophet Muhammad (s) said: “What happened to the Children of Israel will happen to my nation. Example after example. They divided into seventy-two divisions and my nation will divide into seventy-three divisions. One more division than they have. All of them are in the fire except one.” Someone said: “O messenger of God, which is that one?” He said: “It is the one to which we belong now. I and my companions.” [Al-Ma’ani of As-Saduq, page 323, hadith 2]

محمد بن أحمد بن تميم عن محمد بن إدريس عن إسحاق بن إسرائيل عن عبد الرحمن بن محمد عن الإفريقي عن عبد الله بن يزيد عن عبد الله بن عمر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: سيأتي على أمتي ما أتى على بني إسرائيل مثل بمثل وإنهم تفرقوا على اثنين وسبعين ملة وستفترق أمتي على ثلاث وسبعين ملة تزيد عليهم واحدة كلها في النار غير واحدة قال: قيل: يا رسول الله وما تلك الواحدة قال: هو ما نحن عليه اليوم أنا وأصحابي

Abu Aqil reported that Imam Ali (a.) said “This nation is truly divided into seventy-three divisions. By Him in Whose hand is my soul. They are all misguided except the one who followed me and was one of my adherents.” [Al-Amali of Al-Mufid, page 212 – 213, Hadith 3]

علي بن خالد عن محمد بن أحمد بن البهلول عن أحمد بن الحسن عن أحمد بن محمد عن أحمد بن يحيى عن إسماعيل بن أبان عن يونس بن أرقم عن أبي هارون العبدي عن أبي عقيل عن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام قال: لتفرقن هذه الأمة على ثلاث وسبعين فرقة، والذي نفسي بيده أن الفرق كلها ضالة إلا من اتبعني وكان من شيعتي

Muhammad ibn Musa reported that Musa ibn Nasr said: “Ar-Rida (a.) was asked about the saying of the Prophet (s.): “My companions are like the stars. You will be guided rightly whichever of them you follow.” And about his (s.) saying: “Do not bother my companions.” Then he said: “That is right. He means the one who did not bring in any distortions or changes after him.” One said: “How then does one find out that they have introduced distortions and changes?” He said: “By what they narrate, namely that he (s.) said: “Surely, on the Day of Resurrection, people of my companions will be driven away from my basin as the camels of others are driven away from the water. Then I will say: “My Lord, my companions, my companions.” Whereupon someone says to me: “You do not know what they have introduced after you.” Then they take them to the left, whereupon I say: “Away! To the devil with them.” Do you see now? This refers to the one who did not bring in distortions or changes.” [Al-Uyun of As-Saduq, Volume 1, Page 93, Hadith 33]

الحسين بن أحمد عن محمد بن يحيى عن محمد بن موسى عن موسى بن نصر قال: سئل الرضا عليه السلام عن قول النبي صلى الله عليه وآله أصحابي كالنجوم بأيهم اقتديتم اهتديتم، وعن قوله عليه السلام: دعوا لي أصحابي فقال عليه السلام: هذا صحيح يريد من لم يغير بعده ولم يبدل قيل: وكيف يعلم أنهم قد غيروا أو بدلوا قال: لما يروونه: من أنه صلى الله عليه وآله قال: ليذادن برجال من أصحابي يوم القيامة عن حوضي كما تذاد غرائب الإبل عن الماء فأقول: يا رب أصحابي أصحابي فيقال لي: إنك لا تدري ما أحدثوا بعدك فيؤخذ بهم ذات الشمال فأقول: بعدا وسحقا لهم أفترى هذا لمن لم يغير ولم يبدل

Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “My nation will divide into three divisions. One division is adhering to the right (path). The false does not prevail in it. Your example is the example of gold. Every time it is exposed to fire, it increases in quality and pleasantness and their leader is this one. One of three and he is the one whom God appointed as a leader and grace in His scripture (11:17) and one division is adhering to the false. Righteousness does not prevail in it. Their example is the example of the badness of iron. Every time it is exposed to fire, it increases in badness and their leader is this one. One of the three and one division that is adhering to the misguidance. They fluctuate in between. Neither do they belong to them nor to them and their leader is this one. One of the three.” (He said:) “So I asked him about those who adhere to the right and their leader. Then he said: “Ali, the son of Abu Talib, is the leader of the attentive ones and keep away from the two.” So I made an effort for him to name the two. But he did not.” [At-Tara’if by Ibn Tawus, page 241, Hadith 346.]

أحمد بن مردويه عن أحمد بن محمد عن المنذر بن محمد عن محمد بن المنذر عن الحسين بن سعيد عن سعيد بن أبي الجهم عن أبان بن تغلب عن مسلم بن أبي حبة عن أبي ذر الغفاري عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: تفترق أمتي بعدي ثلاث فرق فرقة أهل حق لا يشوبونه بباطل مثلهم كمثل الذهب كلما فتنته بالنار ازداد جودة وطيبا وإمامهم هذا أحد الثلاثة وهو الذي أمر الله به في كتابه إماما ورحمة وفرقة أهل باطل لا يشوبونه بحق مثلهم كمثل خبث الحديد كلما فتنته بالنار ازداد خبثا وأمامهم هذا أحد الثلاثة وفرقة أهل ضلالة مذبذبين بين ذلك لا إلى هؤلاء ولا إلى هؤلاء وإمامهم هذا أحد الثلاثة [قال] فسألتهم عن أهل الحق وإمامهم. فقال: هذا علي أبي طالب إمام المتقين وأمسك عن الاثنين فجهدت أن يسميهما فلم يفعل

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that Imam Ali (a.) said about the verse “Our Lord, show us those from the hidden ones and the people who misguided us” (41:29): “The first to enter the Fire for the injustice against me are (Abu Bakr) Atiq and (Umar) Ibnu l-Khattab.” And he read the verse. [Al-Ghaiah of Al-Bahrani, Volume 4, Page 365, Hadith 2]
