Sa’id Ibn Musayyib reported that Abdullah Ibn Abbas said:“The Messenger of God (s.) took a seat one day, while Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.) were with him. He said: “O God, these are the people of my house and the most honoured of the people with me. Love those, who love them and be angered with those, who are angry with them. Be with those, who are with them and be against those, who are against them. Keep them pure from every flaw and protected from every sin (Ma’sum) and strengthen them with the Holy Spirit!” [Al-Amali of As-Saduq, page 574 Hadith 18]

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “I, Ali, Hasan, Husain and nine of his progeny are being kept pure and protected (Ma’sum).” Hadi An-Najafi writes: “The tradition is authentic (Mu’tabar) according to its chain.” [Uyun-ul-Akhbar by As-Saduq, Volume 2 page 65 – 66 Hadith 30; Mawsu’at-ul-Ahadith by Hadi An-Najafi, Volume 7 page 183 Hadith 7]

Abdullah ibn Mughirah reported that Umm Salamah said: “This verse was revealed in my house: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the house, and to keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) The Messenger (s.) ordered me to call Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.) and when they arrived, he took Ali on his right side, Hasan on his left side, Husain on his belly and Fatimah (a.) at his legs. Then he said three times: “O God, these are my people and family. Therefore, keep the flaw away from them and always keep them perfectly pure!” I said: “What is the case with me, O Messenger of God?” He said: “You are moving towards the good, God willing!” [Al-Amali of At-Tusi, page 263 – 264 Hadith 20]

Husain ibn Ali (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “I entered into the Prophet Muhammad (s.) in the house of Umm Salamah and this verse was revealed: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House and to keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) The Prophet (s.) said: “O Ali, this verse is about you, my two grandsons and the Imams from your progeny.” I said: “O Messenger of God, how many Imams are there after you?” He said: “You are one of them, O Ali, and after that it is your two sons Hasan and Husain. After Husain it is his son Ali, after Ali it is his son Muhammad, after Muhammad it is his son Ja’far, after Ja’far it is his son Musa, after Musa it is his son Ali, after Ali it is his son Muhammad, after Muhammad it is his son Ali, after Ali it is his son Hasan and the proof of God is a descendant of Hasan. In this way I found their names written on one leg of the Throne and I asked God about it, whereupon He replied: ”O Muhammad, these are the perfectly pure and infallible Imams after you and their enemies are accursed!” [Kifayat-ul-Athar of Al-Khazzaz Al-Qummi, page 155 – 156]

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that Fatimah (a.) said: “Against those, from whom God removed the flaw, the people of the House and kept them perfectly pure, it is not permissible to give any testimony, because they are protected (Ma’sum) from any evil and kept pure from any disgracefulness.” [Kitab Sulaim of Al-Hilali, page 227]

Amir ibn Wathilah reported that Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.) said: “I beseech you by God, is there anyone among you, for whom God has revealed the verse of purity to His Prophet (s.): “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and to keep you perfectly pure?” (33:33) Thereupon the Messenger took a cloak from Khaibar and enclosed me in it and also Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.). Then he said: “O Lord, these are the people of my house. Therefore, keep the flaw away from them and keep them perfectly pure!” They said: “God be witness, for none of us!” [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 561 Hadith 31]

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The Messenger of God (s.) passed away, while the authority over this nation was in his hands and in his house and not in the hands of those, who usurped it and not in their houses. God kept the flaw away from the people of His House and kept them perfectly pure. They are more entitled to the matter after him in all respects than anyone else.” Thereupon he addressed his companions and said: “Is it not so?” They said: “Yes, it is so, O Commander of the Believers!” [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 374 Hadith 55]

Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “God kept us perfectly pure and infallible. He appointed us as witnesses over His creation and as His proofs over His earth. He has granted to us that we are with the Qur’an and the Qur’an is with us. Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Obedience is due to God, His Messenger (s.) and those, who possess the command (a.). He commanded obedience to those, possess the command (a.), because they are infallible and kept pure by Him in a perfect manner. Umar ibn Ali reported that Imam Al-Hasan (a.) said: “O people, whoever knows me already knows me and whoever does not know me, know that I am Hasan son of Ali and I am the son of the joyous messenger, warner and caller to God in accordance with His will and I am the luminous guide. Zaid Ibn Ali (a.) reported that Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: “The Messenger of God (s.) was in the house of Umm Salamah and brought a soup. He then called Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.) and they ate from it. Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported that Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: “There is no Imam from us except that he is an infallible one and the infallibility cannot be recognized outwardly on the creature and for this reason it is none except an appointed person.” Thereupon it was said to him: “O son of the Messenger of God, what is meant with the one who is Infallible?” He said: “It is he who holds fast to the rope of God and the rope of God is the Qur’an. They will not separate from each other until the Day of Resurrection and the Imam guides rightly to the Qur’an and the Qur’an guides rightly to the Imam. Hence it is said in the Word of the Exalted: ‘This Qur’an guides rightly to that, which is most straight.” (17:9) [Ma’ani l-Akhbar of As-Saduq, page 132 Hadith 1]

Abu l-Jarud reported that Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) was asked about the verse: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) He said : “This verse was revealed because of the Messenger of God (s.), Ali Ibn Abi Talib, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain and this happened in the house of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Messenger (s.). The Prophet (s.) called Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.) and then put a cloak of khaibar over them and went under the cloak with them. Then he said: “God be a witness, these are the people of my house to whom I promised what I was promised. God, keep away any flaw from them and always keep them perfectly pure!” When this verse was revealed, Umm Salamah said: “Am I with them, O Messenger of God?” He said: “I give you glad tidings, O Umm Salamah! You are moving towards good.” Abu l-Jarud reported that Zaid Ibn Ali (a.) said: “The ignorant among the people claim, that this verse refers to the wives of the Prophet (s.), but they are lying and deceiving themselves. If it meant the wives of the Prophet (s.), then it should be read in feminine form: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you (ankunn), O people of the House, and keep you perfectly pure (yutahhirakunn).” Just as He said: “And remember that which is recited in your houses (buyutikunn).” (33:33) And: “Do not display your ornaments.” (33:33) And: “You are not like any of the women.” (33:32) [Tafsir-ul-Qumi, Volume 2 page 193]

Zurarah reported that Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) said: “With regard to the interpretation of the Qur’an it is not far from the minds of the people that a verse is revealed at the beginning, middle and end of something.” Thereupon he read: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House and to keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) He said: “Since the birth of ignorance.” [Tafsir-ul-Ayyashi, Volume 1 page 17 Hadith 19]

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “God revealed to His Prophet (s.) for confirmation in His Book: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and to keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) These were Ali, Hasan, Husain and Fatimah (a.). The Messenger of God (s.) took them under a cloak in the house of Umm Salamah and thereupon he said: “God be a witness, every Prophet has his people and his weighty thing and these are the people of my house and my weighty thing.” Umm Salamah said: “Am I not one of your people?” He said: “You are moving towards the good, but these are the people of my house and my weighty thing.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 page 287 Hadith 1; Mir’at-ul-Uqul by Al-Majlisi, Volume 3 page 213]

Al-Halabi reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.) about the verse: “My Lord, forgive me and my parents and those, who enters my house as a believer.” (71:28) He said: “By this is meant the authority. He who betook himself under the authority, betook himself to the house of the prophets (a.). As for His word: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and to keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) So it includes the Imams (a.) and their authority. Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Kathir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.) about the verse: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) He said: “It was revealed on account of Prophet Muhammad (s.), the Commander of the Believers, Hasan, Husain and Fatimah (a.). When God took His Prophet (s.) to Himself, the Commander of the Believers (a.) took his position and then Hasan (a.) and then Husain (a.). Then the interpretation moved to the verse: “And the blood relatives are closer to each other according to the Book of God.” (33:6) Therefore Ali, son of Husain (a.) took it over and thereafter it passed to the Imams (a.) from among his authorized progeny. He places him under His protection and guards him from the ropes of Satan and his armies. The Imam is protected from the dawning dark nights and the false accusations of sinners. Safiyyah Bint Shaibah reported that Aishah said: “One morning the Messenger of God (s.) went out, while wearing a black cloak made out of camel’s hair. After that Hasan son of Ali (a.) came and he took him under the cloak. After that Husain (a.) came and he took him under the cloak. After that came Fatimah (a.) and he took her under the cloak. Then Ali (a.) came and he took him under the cloak. Abu Riyah reported that Umar ibn Abi Salamah said: “Prophet Muhammad (s.) had this verse revealed to him in the House of Umm Salamah: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) The Messenger (s.) called Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.) and took them under a cloak. Ali (a.) was behind his back and he took him too under the cloak. Thereupon he said: “God be witness, these are the people of my house. Therefore, keep the flaw away from them and keep them perfectly pure!” Umm Salamah said: “Am I with them, O Prophet of God?” He said: “You are in your place and you are moving towards good.” Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Sunan-ut-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3787]

Ali Ibn Zaid reported that Anas Ibn Malik said: “The Messenger of God (s.) used to pass by the door of Fatimah (a.) at the time of the morning prayer for six months and say: “Up to prayer, O people of the House! God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) Muhammad At-Tirmidhi writes: “Good (Hasan), only known through one route (Gharib).” [Sunan-ut-Tirmdhi, Hadith 3206.]

Atiyyah reported that Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri was asked about the verse: “God only wants to keep the flaw away from you, O people of the House, and to keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) He said: “It was revealed because of five persons: Because of Prophet Muhammad (s.), Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.).” [Asbab-un-Nuzul of Al-Wahidi, Hadith 696]

Ibn Masruq reported that Yazid ibn Hayyan said: “We came in to Zaid ibn Arqam and said: “You have experienced good and were a companion of Prophet Muhammad (s) and you performed your prayer behind him. He said: “I leave you two weighty things: one is the Book of God and this is the Rope of God. Whoever follows it is on the right path and whoever leaves it is on the wrong path.” We said: “Who are the people of his house? Are they his wives?” Zaid said: “No, by God! The wife stays with the husband only for a time. Then he separates from her and she returns to her father and her people. The people of his house are from his roots and his family. They are those who are forbidden to consume the donation after him.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2408]
