Ten merits of Ali

Abu Balj reported that Amr ibn Maimun said:“I was sitting with Abdullah ibn Abbas when nine people came to him and said: ﴾O son of Abbas, either you come with us or you make the people leave us alone.﴿ Abdullah ibn Abbas said: ﴾I rather come with you.﴿ He was healthy that day before he became blind. They began to have conversations (with him), but I do not know what they said. Then he came and shook off his clothes while saying: ﴾Fie, fie. They are attacking someone who has ten merits that nobody has except for him. They attack someone about whom the Messenger of God (s.) said: ﴾I am sending someone whom God will never disparage. He loves God and His Messenger and God and His Messenger love him. He is held in high esteem by them.” Then he said: “Where is Ali?” They said: “He is grinding at the mill.” He said: “Was there no one else among them who could engage in the grinding?” Thereupon he arrived while his eyes were diseased and he could not see. He put saliva on his eyes and shook the flag three times. Then he gave it to him and Ali (a.) came back with Safiyyah, the daughter of Huyayy. Then the Messenger of God (s.) sent someone with the chapter of At-Tawbah and he sent Ali (a.) after him and he took it away from him and he said: “No one goes with it except the man who is from me and I am from him.” Then the Messenger of God (s.) said to the children of his uncle: “Which of you will support me in this world and the next?” Ali (a.) was sitting among them. The Messenger (s.) came to someone of them and said: “Which of you will support me in this world and the next?” But they refused and he spoke to Ali (a.): “You are my close one in this world and the next.” Ali (a.) was the first of the people to accept the faith after Khadija (a.). The Messenger of God (s.) took his mantle and put it on Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (a.) and said: “God only wants to keep away the blemish from you, O people of the House and keep you perfectly pure.” (33:33) Ali (a.) was the one who sold himself (2:207) and put on the clothes of the Messenger (s.). Then he slept in his place and the idolaters used to throw at the Messenger (s.). Thereupon Abu Bakr came while Ali (a.) was sleeping. Abu Bakr mistook him for the Messenger (s.) and said: “O Prophet of God.” Ali (a.) said to him: “The Prophet of God (s.) set out in the direction of the well of Maimun. Catch him up.” Thereupon Abu Bakr left and went with him to the cave. Ali (a.) was pelted with stones just as the Messenger (s.) was pelted with stones and injured and he had his head covered with robes. He did not come out until the morning dawned. After that, he showed his head and they said: “You are not worthy and your companion did not take any harm. We throw at him and you get hurt. We have already rejected this.” The Messenger of God (s.) left for the campaign of Tabuk and the people went out with him. Thereupon Ali (a.) said to him: “I am going out with you.” The Prophet (s.) said: “No.” Thereupon Ali (a.) wept and he said to him: “Are you not satisfied, that your position with me, is that which Aaron had with Moses, except that no one is a prophet after me? It is not befitting for me, to pass away, without you being my successor.” The Messenger of God (s.) said to him: “You are the closest to every believer after me.” The Messenger of God (s.) closed all the doors of the mosque except for the door of Ali (a.) and there was no way to enter except through his way. The Messenger of God (s.) said: “Whose master I am, his master is Ali.” God already told us in the Qur’an that He was pleased with the companions of the tree (48:18) because He knew what was in their hearts. Did He report anything about His anger toward them after that? When Umar said: “Allow me to cut off the head (of the hypocrite).” The Messenger of God (s.) said: “You do such a thing and what makes you know that, perhaps, God has forgiven the people of Badr, so He said: do what you want.” Al-Hakim An-Naisaburi writes: “This tradition is authentic (Sahih) according to its chain, but the two (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not publish it.” Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Mustadrak, Volume 3, page 143 – 144, Hadith 4652]
