Origin of the belief that Jesus is Imam Al-Mahdi

People of Az-Zubair reported about Abdullah ibn Abbas: ,,Mu’awiyah came to him and the Children of Hashim, after which he said: ﴾You want to be entitled to successorship as you are entitled to prophethood, although no one can have both at the same time. Your argument for successorship is deception for the people. You say: ,,We are the people of the house of the Prophet. What do others besides us have to do with the successorship of the Prophet?” And this is deception, because it creates the appearance of legitimacy. As for the successorship, it is given with the consent of the general public and consultation with those of rank among the tribes of Quraish, so that people do not say: ,,If only the children of Hashim had been leading us, for if the children of Hashim had been leading us, it would have been better for us in this world and the hereafter.” After this there is no concern, because they do not agree on the one you hope for and if you would keep away from it, you would not fight for it today. As for that, which you have claimed, that there is a hashimite king and a rising guided one (Mahdi) for you, the guided one (Mahdi) is Jesus, the son of Mary, and this matter is in our hands until we give it to him. By my life, if you would seize it, then the wind of Ad (51:41) and thunderclap of Thamud (41:17) would not be more destructive to the people than you.﴿ On this, he remained silent. Then Abdullah ibn Abbas said to him, ﴾As for your statement that we are entitled to prophethood: By what then are we entitled to it if we are not entitled to it? As for your statement that no one can have successorship and prophethood at the same time, then where does that leave the word of God: ,,We gave the family of Abraham the Scriptures and wisdom, and We gave them mighty kingship.” (4:54) So the scripture is the prophethood and the wisdom is the custom and the kingship is the succession and we are the family of Abraham. The matter of God for us and for them is the same and the custom is the same for them and for us. As for your statement that our argument is deceptive, by God it is more brilliant than the sun and brighter than the light of the moon and you certainly know this, but you got out of yourself. We killed your brother, your grandfather, his brother and your uncle. So do not weep for blackened bones and the souls of the people of the fire and do not be angry because of blood, which allowed and freed the association. As for the failure of people to associate with us, what they forbade from us is more formidable than what we forbade from them. As for your statement that we claimed that there is a guided king for us, the claim is in the scripture of God. He, praise be to Him, said: ,,Those who disbelieved claimed that they would not be awakened.” (64:7) And everyone bears witness for us that there is a King for us, and if nothing would remain from this world except one day, then God would raise up someone from us for His cause, who would fill the earth with equality and righteousness, as it was filled with injustice and transgression. You will not rule for a day except that we rule for two days, and not for a month except that we rule for two months, and not for a year except that we rule for two years. As for your statement that the Guided One (Mahdi) is Jesus, the son of Mary, Jesus only comes down to the Deceiver (Dajjal). When he will see him on this, then he will dissolve like a piece of fat dissolves, while the Imam is someone from us, behind whom Jesus will pray and if I wished, then I would call him by name and as for the wind of Ad and the thunderclap of Thamud, both of them were a punishment, while our kingship, praise be to God, is a mercy.﴿” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 33, Page 256 – 257, Hadith 529]

وحدث الزبير عن رجاله عن ابن عباسأن معاوية أقبل عليه وعلى بني هاشم فقالإنكم تريدون أن تستحقوا الخلافة كما استحققتم النبوة ولا يجتمعان لاحد حجتكم في الخلافة شبهة على الناس تقولوننحن أهل بيت النبي صلى الله عليه وآله فما بال خلافة النبي في غيرنا وهذه شبهة لأنها تشبه الحق فأما الخلافة فتتقلب في أحياء قريش برضى العامة وشورى الخاصة فلم يقل الناس ليت بني هاشم ولونا ولو أن بني هاشم ولونا لكان خيرا لنا في دنيانا وآخرتنا فلا هم حيث اجتمعوا على غيركم تمنوكم ولو زهدتم فيها أمس لم تقاتلوا عليها اليوم وأما ما زعمتم أن لكم ملكا هاشميا ومهديا قائما فالمهدي عيسى بن مريم عليه السلام وهذا الامر في أيدينا حتى نسلمه إليه ولعمري لئن ملكتموها ما رايحة عاد وصاعقة ثمود بأهلك للقوم منكم ثم سكتفقال له عبد الله بن عباس رضي الله عنهأما قولك إنا نستحق الخلافة بالنبوة فإذا لم نستحقها بها فبم نستحقهاوأما قولك أن الخلافة والنبوة لا تجتمعان لاحد فأين قول الله تعالى فقد آتينا آل إبراهيم الكتاب والحكمة وآتيناهم ملكا عظيما فالكتاب النبوة والحكمة السنة والملك الخلافة ونحن آل إبراهيم أمر الله فينا وفيهم واحد والسنة لنا ولهم جاريةوأما قولك إن حجتنا مشتبهة فوالله لهي أضوء من الشمس وأنور من نور القمر وإنك لتعلم ذلك ولكن ثنى عطفك وصعرك قتلنا أخاك وجدك وأخاه وخالك فلا تبك على أعظم حائلة وأرواح أهل النار ولا تغضبن لدماء أحلها الشرك ووضعهافأما ترك الناس أن يجتمعوا علينا فما حرموا منا أعظم مما حرمنا منهم وأما قولكإنا زعمنا أن لنا ملكا مهديا فالزعم في كتاب الله شرك قال تعالىزعم الذين كفروا أن لن يبعثوا وكل يشهد أن لنا ملكا ولو لم يبق من الدنيا إلا يوم واحد لبعث الله لامره منا من يملأ الأرض عدلا وقسطا كما ملئت ظلما وجورا لا تملكون يوما واحدا إلا ملكنا يومين، ولا شهرا إلا ملكنا شهرين ولا حولا إلا ملكنا حولينوأما قولك إن المهدي عيسى بن مريم فإنما ينزل عيسى على الدجال فإذا رآه يذوب كما تذوب الشحمة والإمام منا رجل يصلي خلفه عيسى بن مريم ولو شئت سميته وأما ريح عاد وصاعقة ثمود فإنهما كانا عذابا وملكنا والحمد لله رحمة
